Hi Wanda,
Wow! It really sounds to me that you need to repot tne ferns. I think they have become root bound , literally outgrown their pots, and that is why they are turning brown. When you water them, the water just waters what it can reach and the rest of the ferns don't get any and turn brown (die). That is my suggestion. I hope it works if you try it. Good Luck. 🌹💖😘
Here's a great article from Gardening Know How: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/houseplants/boston-fern/boston-fern-turning-brown.htm
They like to be misted. Use a spray bottle to mist them and that will help.
Perhaps they are watered too much. If they are outside, are they getting too much sun? They will get sunburned, most ferns grow best out of the afternoon sun.
Ferns like to be root bound, very bright light, moist but not soaking soil and most need high humidity(inside house-misting or weekly sprays in shower) no drafts (if in house) they are constantly shedding/loosing leaves. You don't tell us what kind of ferns (there are so many) and where you live(climate) or if they are indoors or outside. give the ferns water soluble miracle grow fertilizer 2x a year as 1 of the regular waterings
