Never had this happen before after years of growing tomatoes. Something ate all the leaves off my newly planted tomato seedlings! Hubby saw a cardinal starting on my pepper plant leaves. Help! (before I buy more plants).

  • What zone are you in? Cardinals do not eat plant leaves, he or she is not the culprit.

Deer will eat tomato seedlings and the tops of established tomato plants. Do you have deer that get into your garden? I cage my tomatoes right from the start. It is helpful to have the cages over them so if it gets too cold at night for the first few weeks of planting in my area I can cover the cages with a sheet. It may also deter some other critters from getting too close to eat them!
