I've use a dark colored tarp before and that did a good job and I also will spray them afterwards to kill the roots. When hand pulling weeds make sure you get the root too. Where? Boiling water. Epsom salt followed by boiling water. Plain white vinegar. Then dig out when dead. Method depends upon location.

I use one cup of vinegar, one cup of salt to two gallons water in a garden sprayer. Do not use on laqwn or in garden. Will kill everything.
