Do you want a cover that looks professional or do you want to do this as cheaply as possible? What type of material do you want to use? A picture would be helpful. If that isn't possible more info would help. What are the dimensions?

12 by 24 but do not need to go full 24. I would like to go as cheap as possible but look professional. I have five posts. not sure what to use as frame and want spouting on front. A friend i have has a smaller one where the spouting is part of frame yet does not show.

    What's spouting?

Spouting is the gutter/downspout system to remove rainwater.

You may want to check and see if you need to get a building permit for you project before attempting this project.

Keith there are a few different ways to do this. Depends on what you like the best.

You could go with a kit that you install.

The big problem I have with those is they aren't always good in a place that get a lot of snow. We had a once in a century snow storm a few months ago and several people that had metal carports woke up to flattened carports from the weight of the snow.

This one is a modified trellis. Will provide shade but not complete protection from rain. Plus if you use wood lattice there is the constant upkeep due to wood rot.
