Do you have a picture? Is it wood, canvas over wood, thick cardboard?
Hi Anna. Always start with a good cleaning. You can find some great natural tsps out there now that will get any old dirt and crud off of your trunk and then it will be ready for paint. You can paint it no matter what the surface is made out of. Most trunks are wood so you shouldn't have a problem having paint stick to the surface. Here is a trunk I painted a long time ago but it gives you an idea of how to recover or leave some of the natural wood showing through.
