The windows are over 50 years old locked closed.Can't be removed.I need to paint or stain them to keep the sunlight shining though.

Why can't they be removed? Why are they locked and closed? It's spring! Open the windows and get some fresh air and beautiful sun! You need to open them to paint them anyway. What are they made of? Wood? Vinyl?
