Well, no matter how much you use, you will still get weeds. Typically 2" to 3" is optimum to keep water evaporation at a minimum and not choke out your plants. Weeds are spread by wind, wildlife and people. The beauty of weeds in the mulch is that they are shallow rooted and very easy to pluck out when they pop up. Mother nature always wins! 🌞
Hi Terrie, A 2 to 3 inch layer will keep the sunlight from reaching the weeds which they need to grow.
I just researched this for my flower gardens! A minimum of 3" depth was recommended. If you're using dyed mulch, be sure to wear gloves and wash the bottoms of your shoes before entering the house. I had black shoe prints to clean off my kitchen floor and under my nails were stained black for weeks!
Hi Terrie, as others have said, 2-3 inches of mulch will help keep weeds at bay, simply because the mulch blocks the sun which plants (weeds) need to grow. Why not put down landscape fabric first, then mulch. That will give you an extra layer of protection.
