How can I easily re-paint a steel outside door?
My current door is a very dark green and has dog scratches at the bottom. I would like to re-paint in a maroon color, but wondering how much sanding must be done before painting.

You should only have to smooth out the areas that are rough, like the scratches. You wan to have a smooth surface to paint but you don't have to sand the entire door. Scrape away any loose paint. Once that is done, clean it and paint with a paint that is formulated for an exterior metal door. Sherwin Williams would be my recommendation.
Kathy has the answer
Kathy is right. When I redid mine, I sanded damaged areas, used a primer intended for metal, and then painted the whole thing.
Hello Rachel, Could not agree more - spot on Kathy!
Is just the paint scratched or actual metal on door? sand rough areas then primer first with KILZ Adhesion 1 gal. White Bonding Interior/Exterior Primer then paint with good exterior paint since it's a darker color the primer will lighten base and reduce amount of paint meeded to provide good coverage.
