Hi Bonnie, if you plan on chalk painting it I would still suggest you sand all the bumps and nicks out of it first. That way you'll have a nice smooth finish to work with.

Antiques are known for there bumps and bruises, it gives them character. You can still refinish it so you can see the cherry wood. When it is stripped and sanded down, those bumps and bruises won't be as noticeable. This way you can hand the table down to the kids or grandkids when the time comes and be the way it was when it was made.

Agree really should sand. Traditionally chalk paint is dead flat , if you want some sheen, just use a satin aquathane as your top coat. I like Rustoleum brand chalk paint, good quality and affordable

They also make top coats which is easier and more durable than waxes.

sounds like it already has beautiful finish, please don't paint it you'll decrease it's value and the wonderful character that it has gotten thru all the years of it's travels, please rethink

Oh how pretty! You should be able to lightly sand with 220 grit sand paper and add your favorite chalk based paint or mineral paint! :) My favorite brands are Annie Sloan, Jolie, and Dixie Belle :)
