Linda....I would wait and plant them in the fall.
It's a little late now, but another trick you can do for winter bulbs is putting them in your fridge for 6 weeks. I start all my bulbs in the house in water bottles/dishes. I cut the top of water bottles off and put marbles/rocks in the bottom of the water bottle or dish, set my bulbs on top and put enough water in so it just reaches the bottom of the bulbs and set in my windows. Make sure there's always water under the bulbs tho
Are you in the northern or southern hemisphere?
I still need to know, how and when to water them once plamted in the garden.
Water as you would tulip bulbs, dahlias, day lilies, or any other bulb flower. Depending on the heat you have or sunny days, I would water them at least twice a week. Put water on the ground around the plant and let it soak into the ground slowly. Depends how deep your bulbs are planted also, but you want to be sure the root system is watered well. Do you have an extension office in Australia? Or a greenhouse that sells plants and bulbs? They will be able to give you the answer to your watering question since they are aware of your climate situation.
