I’m located in central Florida. It gets water twice each week. 15 minutes per zone!the soil is very sandy. Totally sand. give me suggestions it is a large yard. To put down sod would be very expensive. Hope you could give me some less expensive suggestions!thanksalcharwall@gmail.com

We are located near Cocoa Beach and have St. Augustine/flora-tam lawn and water three times a week 1 hour each zone. We have 3/4 acre and husband uses a grass catcher, otherwise you spread weed seeds every time you mow. Having a beautiful lawn is time consuming and I must say our lawn is beautiful.
You need to amend the soil as too much sand dries out too quickly and nothing will grow in it. Try adding some top soil along with peat moss which will help to hold the moisture. Sow a grass seed that is suitable for your climate. If you have a large area then tackle a square at a time and eventually, you will win out. Consider adding some bagged compost to the soil mix as this will give the seed some nourishment.
Plant grasses, or saw palmettos are great for sandy soil
15 minutes twice a week is not enough to sustain a lawn, or anything else. You must increase your watering time.
Last year I killed off my backyard lawn using vinegar. When dead, my gardener cut it out with a sod cutter. Tilled and amended and planted new grass seed. Fraction of the cost of having sod installed.
