Connie, I would try the dollar stores for laundry baskets to use before trying to make them. You can get tall ones that can substitute for hampers there. I use a tall one (with holes in it) for a hamper.
keep your eyes open for them at yard sales, thrift stores etc. I have one in my hall I have used for many years. In my basement where I do laundry I have a wheeled thing that has 3 hanging washable bags, coloreds, whites, blacks that was free at our town swap shop.

In our family I used clothes baskets in each bedroom closet. Worked better than a hamper because on washday you just carry the basket to the laundry room. I found anything damp put in a hamper made it smell bad.
