Hi Viv,
Here's a link that may help you understand what is going on with your red currant bush:

Currant leaf blister aphid. ... A Tiny yellowish aphids feed on the lower surface of the currant leaves, causing blistered leaves, which are initially green but soon turn shades of red and purple. The foliage is often attacked when quite small, but symptoms intensify as the leaf grows.Management – If aphids are still present on the leaf reverse, an organic pesticide containing pyrethrins or insecticidal soap (such as ‘Trounce’) can be used at label rate and applied to the leaf reverse to control the pest. Do not spray while bushes are in bloom as this could potentially kill pollinators. Aphids can also be dislodged with a strong spray of water from the hose.
Prevention – 1. Monitor currants and related hosts regularly once in leaf and check for natural predators such as ladybugs – these can also be released should an outbreak occur. 2. Avoid fertilizing with high nitrogen as the resulting lush foliage will attract more aphids to your currant bushes. 3. Spray your dormant Ribes with a winter application of a superior-type horticultural oil to kill overwintering eggs.If the symptoms were evident last summer, in winter get rid of the eggs by spraying plants with an enzyme wash, which will quickly dissolve them. Don’t wait for the symptoms to appear, as there’s no point in spraying once the leaves have become puckered. Mix a spray with Neem oil to kill the aphids. Apply as directed and repeat every 7 days until clear of insects. Repeat as necessary as this is chemical free!
