try peppermint oil
They don't like mint essential oil either but I don't know as it will kill an ant that big. Borax sprinkled to form a moat around your house will keep them out, as will a ring of diatomaceous earth
I don't know about carpenter ants, but most other ants can't digest cornmeal. I heavily sprinkle where ever they live with the sweetened cornbread and muffin mix you can get real cheap at Walmart in the envelopes. With big ants or big populated mound it takes more than one application, if you see activity when the area is ruffled up, apply more.
