I need to makeover a larger entertainment center. I like the size but the "fake finish" needs help. I live in FL so something coastal.

Chalk paint would be a simple option.
You could repaint the cabinet. A chalk based paint will stick to almost anything. I've painted Ikea furniture with it and had great luck. Some paint companies sell a primer that will help if the finish is shiny. Look into Fusion Mineral Paint products.
We LOVE amy howard one step paint! Just clean your piece with 20% mean green and 80% water, then clean again with just water to make sure there's no cleaner left. This part is the most important. So then choose your colors like a soft turquoise and a sand color maybe for coastal, and paint. Using foam rollers gives a great finish. We sealed ours with minwax poly to protect it from scratches and it's holding up great in a home daycare! Here's one of our pieces.
Hi. There are a lot of coastal colors in the chalk paint that would be really pretty. I would definitely sand first especially if your fake finish has a shine to it now. Also if it is currently a dark color I would prime it first. I find this helps so you don't have to add so many coats of paint.
