How can I make over my kitchen cabinets without ruining them?

Instead of doing floating shelves in our kitchen I want to just take the cabinet doors off two of my hanging cupboards. My question is this: Can I take out the middle bracket that the doors have the magnets on or will it jeopardize the integrity of the cupboard? This is a 1970's kitchen which I have stripped twice and stained but now I want to change it up a bit and take some doors off for some open shelving. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Hi Sandy, that middle piece shouldn't be structural at all. I'm sure your cabinets are secured to the wall their hanging from so you should be good to go.

Thank you! Yes, I think these cabinets have been here since the beginning of time! Needed an opinion and thank you so much!

I have a friend who did that. She cut out the center, leaving just a 2" edge. She had no problems.

  • Hi, Sandy!

That center piece is generally only there to give the doors something to rest on when they’re closed. There’s no reason why they cannot be removed to create open shelving unless the center shelf is attached to it to keep it from sagging. Does that make sense? I hope this helps!

Yes...perfect sense! I thought the same thing after inspecting it for darn near 30 minutes! Needed another opinion and I sincerely appreciate you taking the time! Thank you
