Can you give me suggestions for making over this fireplace (pic)?
My fiance and I just bought a home and want to update the fireplace beyond a fresh coat of paint to the mantel, header, and pillars. The faux red brick trim panel and the hearth extension has to go, but what should we use to replace it? Tile, stone, slate, marble, metal, wood? The space on either side of the insert is less than an inch. Thoughts?

What's your style? If traditional get a mantle that is wider so you can add at least 4 to 6" to sides and top with tile or marble. If contemporary do only tile.

I would update the red brick with marble since it is classic.
You can replace the whole red brick panel and sides using, Rustic Gold Ledger Panel 6 in. x 24 in. Natural Slate Wall Tile, it looks like a rustic stone, and it looks like they are full stones stacked, when done right, it requires little knowledge to install, any home repair store can guide you through the process and what tools and materials you'll need to get the job done, it would look fantastic with your fireplace.
I would remove the trim pieces and then do the flat "1/2 bricks and shiplap to create an industrial farmhouse look perhaps. What is your aesthetic?
I would just add a bigger mantel and whitewash brick or add mosaic tiles..... and of course fresh coat of paint
I would go to Floor and Decor and pick out tiles of your choice and replace all the red brick. I would Use the net tiles as they are easier to work with.
