Basically you mix in water with the paint. This thins it down and allows it to look like a wash. I think you could play with it to see how much brick you want showing through. Good luck!

Hey Tracy! There are so many ways you can whitewash your brick fireplace! You can buy paint that is actually made for whitewashing brick, or as others have mentioned, you can just dilute white latex paint with water! Or you can use joint compound and create a German Schmear look that resembles whitewash, but has more texture! Hope this helps!
