When my husband built our bunk beds he used 4 posts 4x4 and 2x4 for the frame, then drilled holes in the top (or bottom) of the 4x4's to use pegs to stabilize them stacked but removable to put as twin beds in the future. He included a home made ladder for the end and a safe rail on 1/2 on the top outside edge.
