Bunjie cords
Spray ammonia on the inside and outside of the containers. Cats and wild animals hate this. Or put ammonia on cotton balls and place in garbage.
I think bungee cords would work.
Bungee cords don't keep bears out of the garbage and raccoons are smart enough to figure it out as well! Bungee cords may work for other wild animals however and dogs and cats!
if it's raccoons they can undo the bungee cords, do as Judith says with ammonia outside of the cans or use a motion sensor deterent to scare them off or a moition sensor security light.like these https://www.amazon.com/VJK-Ultrasonic-Flashlight-Deterrent-forrepelling/dp/B07SLZ3R17/ref=asc_df_B07SLZ3R17/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=366343878396&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16020880628460047875&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9030040&hvtargid=pla-795097543611&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=81881007528&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=366343878396&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16020880628460047875&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9030040&hvtargid=pla-795097543611

I believe there are trash cans you can buy that have a special latch. You can easily get in it but animals can't.
