Hi Nicole: Well, you don't want to put that dirt on your cat, that's for sure, but it may work around the outside of your house. In the meantime, I think the best thing you can use is the Blue Dawn dish washing soap. Put the kitty in the sink with a thick towel in the bottom so it won't slip around - that's why they hate being in there, the slipping part - and fill it about 2 or 3 inches with warm water. Get kitty wet, and, starting at the neck, squirt on a bit of Dawn and rub the fur until it's all sudsy. Work your way towards kitty's back. Get the kitty all fuzzy with the soap and let the suds sit for about 5 minutes. Then, rinse kitty well. I use the kitchen sink because it has the sprayer. After kitty is rinsed well, put kitty on a white towel and dry it off with your hair dryer on a medium warm heat while combing or brushing him/her. You will see the dead fleas fall off on the towel. Dry thoroughly, arm pits and all:), and comb with a flea comb.
You can also make a spray of a couple drops of Dawn and water and spray around your house. This should kill the fleas. Fleas live about 2 or 3 months, so this will not be a quick fix. There isn't any:( When you vacuum your floors, empty the tube, if that's the type of vacuum you have, or remove the bag, and put the whole thing in a plastic bag and throw away outside. The fleas will live in the vacuum and then sneak out and start living large in your house if you don't. Don't move the vacuum fast, just slow to get the fleas a chance to be sucked up into the vacuum. Vacuum often, and you can wash kitty a couple of times a week if needed. Remember the commercial with the little ducks and Dawn? It's pretty safe:) Good luck to you and kitty.
Just buy the proper treatment from a store or get. Not worth messing around with fleas because of how fast the spread.
A flea comb has always done a great job for me and my cat enjoys the combing. Just comb the flea out and put it in a bowl of soapy water. Dish soap and water works fine.
