How do I garden during the winter?

My family and I are moving into our first home next month. And I want to begin gardening but what do you suggest is the best time to start? Will it be too late to start before the winter comes? And if so how do you all keep your fresh foods during the winter?

    Hi Donna,

What state will you be in so we can get the right planting zone for you?

Depending on where you are, it's probably too late to start growing food outside, but you could start growing herbs inside or something like that. And around March or so, you can start seedlings inside to plant in your garden in the spring.

Congratulations on your new home!!! I plan to continue my gardening inside. I renovated my garage - still holds a car but also will be a winter escape. I widened the window sill and added a 3 tier shower shelf. At work I have a large window sill so options are endless! My plan is to provided some insulation to both for the winter months using drop ceiling insulated white tiles, they will help keep them warm and if angled properly the white will reflect the sunlight to the backs of the plants as well.

  • Congratulations on your new home! Where is your new home? I am in zone 9 and can grow some things year round. If we know where you are, we can offer many suggestions to get you started.

You can create compost year round. Also, farm worms to create additional soil amendments. Plenty of info online about both.
