If it is at a sink vanity, then I would use a petroleum-based mastic, not thinset, and I would use a tile that is “gauged” meaning it can be butt-jointed to not have grout joints. This is because grout is what fails on tile projects over the years.
If you insist on grout joints, then the grout must be non-sanded, have acrylic additive and then be sealed a day after it’s cured.
Wear latex or vinyl gloves. With the fan running- Mastic with a notched trowel, clean up as you go, as once it dries, it’s not coming off. Dry 24 hours.
Wear latex or vinyl gloves. Grout is messy & a bit caustic. Mix small batches, push in joints, wipe clean with large sponge. Keep two large buckets of clean-up water. Let set for 20 minutes & make sure excess grout is wiped off. Grout “haze” can be seen in 30 minutes & must be wiped off.
Clean up everything and then take a break. Go back & look at the work and bring that sponge, water bucket & a t-shirt fabric rag.
Seal it after it’s thoroughly dry with a non-yellowing permeating sealer.

Hi Emily,
Here are several ideas I found on Hometalk for you. https://www.hometalk.com/search/posts?filter=tile%20backsplash
Hi Emily,
When you buy your tiles, also buy Fixative and Grout (sometimes combined) and your tools for the job ( Tile cutter if going to be required, Tile knips, Adhesive spreader, grouting tool and a sponge) Always feel free to ask for advice about fixing from the store (it's part of their job to advise) They may even have leaflets as do the Large DIY stores..........
You will need to follow the line of the bath or sink. Measure to see how many tiles you will need to do the job. Equal them out to fit, then when ready apply the tiles following the instructions on the adhesive pot. Hope that of some help.
i have the tile its in one piece just for small area in bathroom what kind of grout do I need
