I would prep them well, and then paint with a durable cabinet paint like Benjamin Moore Advance. Then I would seal them with Poly so the paint lasts!

If you are wanting a different look - cut strips of lunan, 1/4th inch plywood into 2.5 to 3" wide and put around the edges for a shaker look. I used 3 in wide strips to cover the designs in the wood of my doors. It looked very nice in white when finished.
