Damaris....Install another piece of wood on lower three cubbies and use for shoes or you could just purchase baskets for the lower cubbies for hats, scarves, gloves, etc.

Depending on Where you need more storage, the only other thing I would consider in addition to the great ideas above,
if you want it in the kitchen, remove the cushion and set it up as an appliance bar. I would drill holes in the back and run a surge protector plug strip behind it.
If in the kitchen or bath, I would go for plastic bins, so that they can be washed.
If you want to make it movable, I’d buy two furniture dollies for $6 each at Harbor Freight and through bolt them into the bottom. That 8 heavy duty casters & built bases for $12.
