One of the biggest things you can do to keep the house free of fleas is to vacuum, sweep/mop, and wipe down baseboards to get rid of eggs. Treat all the openings to your home outdoors. Wash (especially dog's items) in HOT water and dry with HIGH HEAT as this will kill fleas and their eggs.
During a couple of infestations, I found that covering everything where food is prepped, delicate surfaces, and using bug bombs while we were gone to be extremely effective. Before returning we opened all the windows to let the house air out completely. I'm extremely chemical sensitive and had no issues doing this and it solved the problem.
I now treat my dogs with oral flea medication because of it's protection against heartworm. I don't think the topical treatments are overly effective and I don't like the stench of the chemicals surrounding my fur babies.
