Get rid of it in my opinion, and put tv in built ins behind it, looks like it takes up alot of space
Agree with Matthew that the unit seems to be taking up a great deal of floor space. Instead of spending money trying to transform it, donate it on to a better home, and enjoy your more spacious room.
I agree it is taking up too much space plus competing for attention with the books in the background. If you are still inclined to keep it- think about covering it with faux stone veneer or wallpaper. If possible raise it.
I would add a doily or runner on top and change out the handles if I were to update it. It is a beautiful cabinet, but it might serve you better somewhere else in the home and put the tv on the built in shelves that are behind it? You could use the cabinet as a kitchen side board , a spare bedroom, or basement, even as an entertainment center.
There's a lot going on in that space and uncluttering would ease the congestion of the area. I would remove the entertainment center/fireplace and neatly arrange the area surrounding the shelves. Remove anything not necessary to the space---you want to relax & watch tv or cozy up to the fireplace without being crowded. There is another fireplace behind the cabinet? I'd mount the tv above that fireplace, securing & running the cords behind the tv and down behind the trim on the fireplace. Good luck!
If you don't want to get rid of it, I'd chalk paint it gray and the shelves around it, too. I inherited an old brown buffet and I chalk-painted it, and topped it with granite.
