How can I keep the snow from falling in front of the side door?
We had a metal roof installed on our garage and last winter all the snow slid in front of the side door. I was thinking maybe some kind of gable.

You could add an awning.
Hi Candace, you could add steel stops. They're just long strips of steel that keep the snow from sliding off wherever you don't want it to. My aunt had them put above her front door and garage door.

The steel stops work well and if you can add a gutter that is helpful too. The gutter will keep any melting snow from dripping in front of the door and creating ice.
Fabric awnings will likely not be strong enough to survive the weight of the snow during the winter without tearing, sagging, bending, or warping.
