How much do I trim a wysteria plant?
How much should I trim my wysteria plant. It still has leaves, but lots of tiny 4" long branch spikes growing out of the stems. It is in a large pot and I am wondering if I should cut all of these spikes or leave them alone. I want to hopefully have flowers this year. Thanks for any answers I live in LA area in Calif, so not much rain, It is in full sun
You can trim a wisteria as much as you want, they are quite hardy. It takes them a couple of years to flower. Prune wisteria in late winter. Remove at least half of the prior year's growth, leaving just a few buds per stem. If you want a more formal appearance, prune again during summer, after traditional flowering. For more blooms, try cutting back the rampant shoots every two weeks during the summer.
I don't think I explained what I am talking about in the shoots. There are a whole bunch of them and they are about 4" long and about the size of a toothpick. It has already grown for a few years and I would like to try and get it to flower this next spring or summer. Mine still has leaves on it but mainly towards the bottom. I'm not seeing buds at all. So not sure I did cut off the top of it about 2 ft down from the top.
Thanks again for responding.
