You can use a roller but you'd need to go horizontal so as to not leave paint in the areas between each board. Alternatively, if you're doing a large area a paint sprayer would be the best solution for getting an even coating all over without excess paint in the crevices.
It's the same technique as a wall. You can use a brush to cut in the top and bottom of each board. And then use a small roller for the flat areas. Here is a small roller: https://amzn.to/2DFvcz3
