For what purpose? Where is it going?
Use hot glue.
Hot glue will work and I would say the size of the rope should fit the size of the pole. If it is a short pole maybe use a lighter weight. Does that make sense?
I'm not sure what your issue is. Posting a photo would help!
If you want it permanent, use a glue gun and slowly put the glue on the pole then affix the rope, wrapping around as you go up..
If it's indoors, use a glue gun, dab blobs of glue as you wrap around the pole.
I'd use hot glue to hold it in place as your wrap it.
