I like to store small groups of toys in mesh laundry bags. It makes it easy to see what’s inside, plus you can throw them in the dishwasher (if they’re dishwasher safe). :)
I have commonly seen a bookshelf type set up with soft cloth colorful bins storing toys. That gives you the opportunity to sort them.
We did a folding bench that has storage underneath. It's almost 3 years old and has held up very well. It's a kit that I painted and added vinyl.
Akinyl....Totes should work
When my kids were little, I preferred a big basket. Don't try to organize by type unless you want to drive yourself crazy.
Purging toys is also helpful. They seem to accumulate small junky toys so I went through them and tossed whatever was junky or broken.
The toy stage doesn't last forever and is over far sooner than you think it will be.
When my kids were little, I bought a shoe bag and had the kids put their small items in them. This included pencils, crayons, McDonald's toys, legos, barbie clothes, and such. This pockets on the top were for items that weren't used as often or seasonal, such as winter gloves and hats.

We also made a clothes hamper that hung over the door.. This made laundry more fun for them because they had to throw their clothes until they got them in the basket.
In the boy's room we had strung a fishing net across the corner of the ceiling and the stuffed animals had to "sleep" there. When the kids wanted to play with them, we would drop the side and let them all fall on the bed. Then we would put the side back up and the kids would play with them and then had to toss them into their "bed" before they themselves could go to bed.
In the girl's room, we hung a piece of lattice on the wall and we have little hanger clips and the girl's hung all kinds of items on the wall.
We put shelves about 12 inches from the ceiling in each of the kid's rooms and the items that they wanted to display, were sat on those shelves, along with books, photos, and clock.
here are some ideas!
