Tweezers. Get as close to the skin without touching the skin and slowly pull the tick out. The head will be stuck in the skin that is why you want to pull the head out. Watch when you do so as sometimes ...and this is gross....they will crush and you don't want to get squirted with them. Put a dab of peroxide on each as they can get infected. Take to the vet as soon as you can to be tested for Lyme disease. The longer the dog has the disease without antibiotics the less his chances are. Put the ticks you pull out in alcohol or the toilet immediately to kill them. God Bless you for taking the pup in. I think this may be a gift to you. Merry Christmas and hope this helps. All of the nonsense about putting solutions like nailpolish and matches etc is ALL NONSENSE. You only make the tick dig in deeper. Get the tweezers and magnifying glass out and start plucking.
You can buy a tick key. They are available at any place that sells first aid for wilderness and they cost a couple of dollars
Here's some info for you Madelin. I hope you will be careful with a stray dog. You don't really know what their temperament is and he might be scared and unsure of anything you do even if you are trying to help him. Be prepared to take this dog to a vet if you end up keeping him. You don't know if he has ever been vaccinated and whether or not this has affected his health or he might be a threat to you or other animals in your home.

Hi Madelin,
I have to agree with Gk, a stray dog has an uncertain background...may or may not be good with kids, bites when threatened, possibly bit by something rabid and not showing signs yet, survival skills are now reawakened if it was a someone's pet... a whole bunch of red flags should be coming to you. You want to help, and that is very gracious of you to help an animal in need. Please, err on the side of caution, take it to a vet and let them do what is best for the dog.
Hi Madeline, God bless you for caring about stray dogs. We found one about 3 months ago, he is now healthy, happy in his new home (ours) and neutered. Thank you for caring about animals in need. Most household tweezers have large, blunt tips. You should use fine-point tweezers, to avoid tearing the tick and spreading possible infections into the bite area. Spread your dog's fur, then grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Very gently, pull straight upward, in a slow, steady motion.May 24, 2019

Dab little blobs of Vicks Vapo-Rub on the tick, wait for the magic. It will let go and you can just brush them off.
