Repurposed Shoe Storage Into Functional Headboard Shelf
this is a headboard for a Queen sized bed in our house. I bought the headboard at an auction for $15, some years ago. It is very convenient. It has two sliding doors in the center and hods a fair number of books.

If your headboard is timber, you could fix a piece of timber each side of the bed at the back of the headboard and extending to the side enough for you to attach a shelf onto it via screws or a bracket. Other ways are also possible, do post a picture...
