If you are using the fireplace it would be hard to hide it. There are building and insurance codes that prevent you from putting flammable materials too close to it.

If it's like the one Cheryl describes nothing you can do.
Since your not using it just remove it.
A photo would help to discern orientation and possible solutions.
Decorate around it. Ad a basket with a blanket and some small logs as if you use. High temperature paint can be used on it as well.
I use a lots of baskets and props such as plants
This will sound odd but I find that if you have a feature that stands out like a sore thumb, it’s best to enhance it. It will be lessened that way. If you treat it like you use it, it will integrate.
