I collect used K-cup cups (don't empty them) as seed starters. Simply place your tomato seeds (or any others) in them, place in sunlight and water as needed. The organic nutrients from the old coffee grinds are the perfect starting medium for seeds. Once the sprouts get to be about 2-3" tall, replant.

I live in Zone 9 and have already started a tray of tomato seeds in tiny peat pots. I put them outside on the patio table during the day and bring back in late afternoon. If you can't do that, make sure to place in a South or West facing window to get the most light if you are in the Northern Hemisphere. You can always use a grow light which you can purchase at any hardware, home improvement center or nursery.

Just don't get anxious and start them too early. Add a couple of weeks to your last expected frost date and start them 4 - 5 weeks ahead of that.
Tomatoes are pretty forgiving. A few of mine fell off the vine in the fall and reseeded themselves. I had at least 7 plants that from the previous year grow. I am in zone 6 with a chilly planting start of the season so if they come up by themselves you should not have trouble planting according to the zone you are in and the instructions on the package.
