try decoupage with tissue paper
Decoupage means to cut out and here are two samples of it. For lampshades the back of the images must be blank as light shining through would show back of image if there is anything there. You could also cover with fabric, either pleating it on around the top or gluing it on with Elmers. You could also apply wallpaper or pleat paper around the shade, or scan in comic strips and glue them on. Depends on your taste, style and interest.
Fabric cam also be adhered to a lampshade:

Hi Don. I have painted lamp shades before and it works really well. You can add texture with paint or embellish. Good luck with your project.
Hi Don. You could use fabric glue to put burlap squares on the lamp shade for a whole new look. You could also make a bead fringe around the bottom. Now that would be a shabby/chic for sure. Good luck Don.
Here is one I painted and decorated. Very different from the norm.

You could spray paint it you know lay news paper down and spray it and change the color or you could get material and cover it with strips of material and you wrap them all over the shade one next to another from one long piece
You can decoupage artsy pictures onto your shade. One asy idea is to locate one o those "bubble" expandable strapless/sleeveless tops that wee so popular a few years about. Simply stretch it over the shade! Some were printed and some were a plain color. In the winter, you could use an old colorful sweater in the same way.
Keep in mind that the more opaque/the darker the color of a lampshade is, the less light that will shine through the shade. Depending on the actual color, sometimes the light shining through will seem to be the color of the shade, even if the bulb is clear.
