Do you have a picture? You can recover or use fabric paint. Do you want to make it into something else?
I have a large padded ottoman that I made a cover for last year. I took a drop cloth and pinned and sewed into a cover. Basically a simple slipcover. As long as the fabric is larger than what you are making the cover for, you can use a sheet, drop cloth, etc. , tucking and pinning it until you get the look you want. It was a quick fix for something that didn't work for me anymore. Here's some things to get you started:

Hi Patty. You could paint the fabric to make over your ottoman. There are some great fabric paints on the market. I recommend acrylic fabric paint for your ottoman. You can choose the method you like from painting it on, spraying it on and even use markers. You can purchase acrylic fabric paint at fabric shops, craft stores, Wal Mart, and on Amazon.
Like dining chair seats, take off old padding and fabric and use as templates for new foam and fabric. Spray fabric with waterproofing or use Sunbrella fabric for easy cleaning. Use heavy staple gun to pull tight
