try isopropyl alchocol. The 90% stuff
It depends on the finish of the metal. I'd try Goo Gone, WD-40, a magic eraser, or Bar Keeper's Friend.

Hello I often find a medical alcohol wipes —-you can buy a box of them for a dollar or two —often help remove the unwanted marker .
