I would like to stain a stencil on a section of my patio since rugs are not working because of the weather they never dry out or in time begin to mold.i think a stain design would mimic a rug.

Hi there, I'm not sure if its possible to achieve a stencil effect with stain but it would work with paint. Here's how one blogger did it: https://www.cuttingedgestencils.com/blog/learn-how-to-stencil-a-concrete-balcony.html
First, it will need to be clean & dry. Make sure you use a cleaner that doesn't leave a residue and scrub well. You might need to pressure wash & use a degreaser if there are old stains but since you've had rugs, hopefully not.
Next, you will mix muriatic acid with water 1:4 and sprinkle over the area. This will bubble and etch for pad. After 20-30 minutes you can sweep away while using water - lots of it. This stuff is caustic so wear a mask, rubber boots, and gloves. Protect all areas of skin.
Wait at least 2 days to completely dry and sweep off any powder residue left. Then you can start applying the stencil and stain.
Finally, once it is stained you can seal with a water based sealer using a garden sprayer or a roller.
If you don't feel like you need it, you can skip the muriatic step and only pressure wash with a cleaning solution.
