Clean off the counters, remove all the decor, so that you are looking at a blank slate. Painting the walls, changing curtains can give you an inexpensive update for a whole new look. A couple of new dish towels and you will have a fresh new look.
Wow. Color updates anywhere are tough. So, Let me give you the same advice that I gave to Pam who is looking to paint a new prefab home:
The best place to go is to the Paint Section where they have Free Cards with Color Samples for exterior paint, stains, and everything else.
Spend about 2 or 3 hours to Pick out about 50 or so that you like alot.
Bring them home and look at these colors for at least 3 weeks.
Seriously, make these your Kitchen Table and Den Decor for a while.
Put them aside remote controls.
Put them in Napkin Holders.
Eat Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner looking at them.
Make sure the family does too.
Put them between Salt and Pepper Shakers.
Serve the family Spaghetti and the sloppiest foods you know.
Tape them to cereal boxes if you have too many.
In 3 weeks or less you will figure out which ones the family collective mind most likes. How?
The ones that are least sloppy and haven't been used for
• napkins
• paper towels
• tissues
• swatting flies
• sweeping up crumbs and slops
• scraping up dropped meatballs
or otherwise discarded, are the ones your family's collective mind most like.
And you know what? They're right!
Trust me, this works.
It may sound crazy, but If you can't stand a color in your life 24 hours a day for 3 weeks, you sure as heck can't stand it in your life 16 hours a day for 20 years.
Hi Carla. You will get the biggest bang for your buck with paint. I like light colors for walls and white trim. It's a timeless look and the white trim makes things look clean and crisp.
Switching old light fixtures with new ones, either with integrated LED lights, (first two pictures show different examples of new fixtures) or LED light bulbs, is one of the fastest and easiest ways to refresh and update a kitchen.
Incandescent (old style) light bulbs shine yellowy light, and fluorescent a green tone. LED light varies in whiteness and brightness depending on if it is rated warm, cool, or daylight.
The last picture shows the inside of a shallow integrated LED light fixture.
Yes I agree with paint! It can make a huge difference and is the most affordable! Also check in to epoxying your countertops! Here is a link for how to paint your cabinets and how to epoxy your countertops!
Hi ! When we moved into or retirement home ( it was our first house ! ) every room needed to be updated and brought out of the 1970's !!!! The kitchen was on the end of the list . We knew we had a couple of years before we were planning on moving in full time , so we did it room by room , working every other weekend . Well , I was impatient and thought I could at least make the kitchen look better , until we were ready to really update it .
This is what I did , for about $350 !
Glued beadboard to the front of my cabinet doors
painted my cabinets white
painted my Formica countertops a deep charcoal color
changed out my kitchen faucet
laid down vinyl wood look plank flooring
Changed out ceiling fan/light .
It totally changed my kitchen !!!!
My husband was so impressed with how it came out , that he decided to buy new appliances , while there was a big 40% off sale going on . Actually the only plans I have for the kitchen now , is that I will probably replace the painted countertops with quartz or stone but I am not in a hurry ...
Good luck with yours !!!! Paint and new faucet and new hardware for your cabinets can be an inexpensive way to update your kitchen !

First, set a budget. Second, choose a look. Then see what you can achieve within that budget towards your goal look.
Paint is quick, inexpensive, and has a big wow.
New appliances can run the extreme on expenses, as can countertops and backsplash.
Decor items can also play a big part in the look of a kitchen, or any room.
