How to Tile a Backsplash
Often this is used as a backer board for tile, but to get creative, it could be used as a base for a creative mosaic as a backsplash.
Penny: maybe this will help. CBU is used UNDER tile.

Help! Cement board,Sheetrock, more Drywall? For tiling kitchen backsplash.
Too porous to leave untreated, thats why its used for tiling, absorbs tile mastic and can hold the weight of the tile.
Apply a classic white subway tile on top of the concrete board.
Concrete board is the base for adhering tile. It has a texture to it to grab the mastic.

Hello the concrete backer board is used as substrate backer board for tile. It’s not meant to be a top surface.
While I agree that concrete backer is the substrate, it is also your true water barrier. That being said, it's ugly. I recently watched a unique finish that looks like earthen walls. The creator had taken backer board (fully installed and taped) then covered the backer with thin layers of thinset that he then burnished. It was beautiful and incredibly durable. If you listen carefully, he discusses it midway in this video. His whole house interior is finished this way including his built-in pizza oven and shower walls. https://youtu.be/WxTdiFreIms
Hello there,
Cover it with Ceramic tiles, Mosaic tiles, Glass tiles, /glass buttons, Pennies or coins, anything you like you can stick on and grout between. Best wishes.
