It is accomplished by a series of knots in the rope. First decide what you would like to make and then you can find directions online. I used to make plant hangers as gifts for people, 1 or 2 a day in the summer when I was out of school & not working. I found it to be very fun.
Hi! That's a craft I want to learn, too. I've been watching videos to learn a few of the knots, including this one:
Here's some tutorials on how to macramé! It's not hard once you get the hang of it and the more you do the easier it becomes! Start with a small, easy project! It used to be quite the rage in the 70's and now it's coming back!
Once you get the hang of it? HAHAHAHA Great pun! :)
A good site for beginners:

Hello here’s a link that might be helpful.
I have some macrame pieces my did for me years ago, They are really nice small pot hangers. You can Google and videos will show the steps plus tell the sizes of materials and beadings to use. Good luck to you.
Wendy is wiz at macrame and has lots of plans for it: http://www.myfrenchtwist.com/diy-craft-projects/macrame-made-easy/
My mother taught me when I was little (in the 80's) and it wasn't in style anymore...haha. I am so happy she did though because it is everywhere now and I love it. If I could do it when I was young, anyone can do it. I would make bracelets and necklaces which I think are a little harder than the big rope knots. Anyway, I found a video for you to learn the basics.
The intro is long but it shows how to start right from the beginning to tie onto a piece of wood. Good luck!
