Hello! Depending on the current condition of your chair now—I think polyshades might be the product to consider for your need
Here’s a link to look over the content and see if it’s a product that will meet your needs. It can be applied over existing existing poly finishes without any stripping or sanding. I find reviews and Q&A’s can often direct me towards the correct purchase. Hope this helps.

First, make sure you get any of the lacquer/varnish/polyurethane off because you need stain to reach the grain of the wood. A water based gel stripper is the easiest to use on spindles and legs. Once stripper has been removed, you can sand any imperfections, stain and varnish/poly/lacquer. I really like the results of varethane products. They are more expensive and for good reason. Also, if the quality of the bare wood seems uneven, a sanding sealer prior to stain might be a good idea.
Any good gel stain will work. You can go darker but not lighter. I use Minwax products.

Here is a wooden rocking chair I have restored. There could be some information that can help you. https://uniquecreationsbyanita.com/?s=Rocking+chair
Hi Victoria - We found these vintage Adirondack chairs that were from the 1930's, and restored them into gorgeous pieces of outdoor furniture. I know it's not a rocker like you have, but hopefully will help with some inspiration. You can see the transformation here (and they have even been featured by Hometalk!). Good luck! Hugs, Holly

Hi Victoria:
I would clean the rocker with TSP. Let dry really well. Then lightly sand with a sanding sponge. Clean again to get all the dust off. Use a good stain, Minwax or General Finishes are my choices. Use an old tshirt to apply and wipe off to get the color you want. Then apply either a lacquer finish or poly acrylic finish for protection.
You could try using a gel stain by General Finishes. This paint doesn’t require a lot of staining.
Victoria....Remove the old paint if it has any and choose stain then afterwards apply poly. I am getting ready to do one myself when the weather gets a little warmer. Send us a before and after pic when you complete. Thanks and good luck.

Hello Victoria, you can sand it down to the good wood, and pick a stain you love. You can apply it by brush or by rag.
