Hello Nell, Wood is the least expensive material you can use to build a privacy fence. For a typical installation; including fence panels, posts, gates, etc., a treated wood fence is approximately 50% less expensive than a typical Vinyl fence is to install. Here is a link that will give you some ideas i hope,

Hi Nell. I'm Cindy. We have a chain link fence around our back yard. I wanted to have more privacy too. I looked into the slats that you feed thru the chain link. (I was so surprised about the different choices in the slats. Not just different colors, but there are slats that look like ivy, bushes, and a lot more.) We ended up planting arbor vitae's directly in front of the fence. They grow very tall and slender. They give us much more privacy than I thought possible. I wanted to share this with you to provide other means of privacy than a fence.
Neil...l love vinyl...we have a 2 rail vinyl at our house. My husband had his own fence business so surprised me with ours but had done many privacies. He used the produce Buffteck.

Hi! We have a wood privacy fence and love it! You can buy the fence sections, posts and gates at Lowe's and Home depot. Make sure you get a permit so you don't get fined or worse, have to take it back down. My son-in-law built one with brick columns and cedar fencing between the columns that is really nice. Some municipalities have height restrictions so check before doing anything.

You can go with the traditional wooden privacy fence. Using pressure treated lumber you can leave as-is with no finish and seal annually. You can stain fairly quickly after installation for a different color. If you want to paint it, you will need to wait at least 6 months for the oils used in the pressure treating process to dry out. Then prime with a good oil based primer and exterior paint.

How to Build a Fence Pergola
home Depot has sections with fake greenery
To Cynthia’s points, every City & County has their own Fence Ordinances and the easiest thing for you to do is look up on line what yours are.
Sinking fence posts the proper amount requires a large auger, sized proportionally to the post size (2” tubular steel vs 4x4 treated lumber).
Don’t skim on this process, or your fence will start to fall over, years down the road (like my neighbors’ did).
If you have Menards DIY stores where you are, their pre-made 6’x6’ vinyl fence sections are cheaper than Lowes or Home Depot by almost half price. Vinyl is appealing because it doesn’t rot nor change color and is opaque.
