Anna: you can use chalk paint on anything! (You might even want to dark wax the details!)
You will have to do a bit more prep work for a shiny surface if you choose chalk paint.

Sand with 150 grit sandpaper to remove any gloss. Prime with Kilz primer. Then paint you color. Latex acrylic paint should work. Seal with three coats of a water based polyurethane

Chalk paint is easy, but if you want a shiny finish, then go with what William suggested.

I see everyone saying chalk paint, but on a highly lacquered surface, you should do a light sanding, no matter what paint you decide to use. I'd love to see the furniture!
If you choose chalk paint be sure to top coat it or a wax finish, otherwise it will chip off.
