How to cover popcorn ceiling
I have removed the pop-corn in five rooms in my house. Technically, it is easy. Spray the pop-corn and scrape it off. In a small kitchen this should take about an hour.
Scrape it off, wipe it down with a wet rag, then repainted it.
In one room I scraped most of it off then troweled over it to flatten it more like orange peel. It needs to be primed with an oil based primer so it doesn’t loosen the remaining pop-corn then it can be repainted.
William has given many good references. You can do Google searches for more exact techniques.
I would not try to fix it because it is almost impossible job and very very messy . I would ass thinest quarter of inch sheetrock right over that popcorn ceiling
Hi! It is messy! But, I sprayed it first with a spray bottle filled with warm water, a small section at a time. Then you scrape it off. Take everything you can out of the room first and cover everything else. Or, you can cover it. I have done both, and considering how messy it was, and how much work finishing the uncovered ceiling (you will find it rough under the popcorn finish) was, with removing the finish, I much preferred when we sheet rocked over the next one. We rented a machine that lifts the panel up, fastened it to the wood rafters over the old stuff, spackled, sanded, painted and we had a gorgeous new ceiling. It cost more, but, was a lot less fuss and muss. Or you could go with beadboard, tin, fake tin etc. Good luck!
If you deal with it be careful. A good part of the older popcorn ceilings contain asbestos. Do your homework on the age of the house and find out when they discontinued using asbestos in popcorn ceilings.
If they haven’t been painted you can spray them down with water and scrape them down
Since your ceiling area is small, put down a drop cloth, spray with water and scrape off the popcorn surface. The surface under the popcorn may be rough and irregular, creating a whole new project for you. Have you considered covering the ceiling with drywall or peel and stick Styrofoam tiles. Amazon has a really good selection, you can cut them to fit, and they can be painted.

Hello Cathy,
If you suspect it could be from the 60's call in a specialist as it could be it is an Asbestos mix! Best wishes.
Wet it down and scrape it is the best way. Here's a good tool to use for scraping:

Not at all hard to get rid of. Spray with water and scrape off with paint scraper. If they have been painted it is tougher to remove. Consider covering with beadboard an inexpensive solution. Under $20 for a 4' x 8' panel.

I have looked into this too and honestly it seems to be very messy. I thought about just scraping it and see what happens but everything I read says to wet it and then scrape it. Honestly, I think I am leaving this to the professionals. LOL!
