Becky, I think your archway needs plants that vine. Clematis, Bougainvillea, Roses, and Wisteria are all plants that will grow up and over your archway. At the end of every season prune everything back down to approx 6 inches tall. Next season they will grow bigger and better. For special occasions you could put fairy lights on it too.
Hello could you possibly post a photograph to better see your situation and area of concern?
Having a visual might be helpful to be able to offer the best guidance .....to a help find the best suggestions or potential solution.
This is a very different idea:

Without seeing it, I would suggest adding trim and perhaps a wood applique (decorative wood). Good luck and stay well!

Add Charm to an Old Farmhouse Door With New Trim
Hi Becky,
Inside or outside doorway? Any photo's you could share? Outdoor - Climbing plants. Inside - overhead Draped curtain????????? Without the photo's it is difficult to be more informative.
Hey Becky,
Please narrow down what your arch is, indoor, outdoor. What is it made of...wood, brick, stone, plaster, have columns, have stained glass, shelves? A picture would save lots of speculation and you could have some solid suggestions.
A pretty stencil is always a nice way to dress up an arch. Add some wood trim or tile for a different look.
Becky: if the archway is that old, it may have its own beauty and character! Maybe it's best to leave it alone.
However, a small commitment would be using a stencil to highlight the arch.
My favorite archway decorations are silk flowers with fairy lights. You can get battery operated if an outlet isn't available.
Corbels with a sheer curtain through them. Plastic painted any color or wood.
Hi Becky, hope this helps you pick some ideas out, one has different moldings
