What veggies can I grow in these?
our back deck has some sunlight where these planter boxes are. I’ve never gardened but would love to attempt to grow some veggies back here. What can I plant and what do I need?

What can I place inside this planter in order to use less soil?
This planter is 18" wide and 32" high. What do you put inside this container so you do not have to use so much soil? Empty water bottles?
Cool weather crops—lettuces and radishes.
Lisa: Lettuce and radishes is what II was thinking too! Spinach would work --- as well as herbs! YUM!
I grew carrots but they were baby carrots and came out crocked. Looked funny but were good anyway. Also grew chives and other herbs. Not good for mints though they over take the planter.
These would be great herb planters.
Since your planter boxes are pretty shallow as well as narrow, your choices are limited. Here's an article that may help you decide on a couple of ones that MAY be suitable. Bibb lettuce might grow and would be nice to watch grow.

Strawberries would work well. So would lettuce.
Hi Lisa - I would recommend something in the lettuce or herb family that doesn't grow big. It also looks shady with the tree??? Think about lettuce, kale, thyme, basil, cilantro... lots of great options!
This is the ultimate and super easy step-by-step guide to determine your plant hardiness zone, your frost dates, and also when to start planting indoors and outdoors. Plus lots of great resources. Hope this helps and happy gardening! Hugs, Holly

I agree with the others lettuce and spinach would be happiest in a shady spot like that :)
How about herbs? :)
Maybe green onions
Herbs would probably do well!
Before you begin, see if you have chipmunks, squirrels, or birds nearby that will eat strawberries or lettuce. Herbs would be safer, and will keep mosquitoes away. You can find herbs in different colors and scents, and those like lemon thyme have a tiny flower. You'd have better luck growing cherry tomatoes/lettuce in larger, deeper patio pos that you can drape with netting and secure with rocks.
I agree that herbs would be a good choice. Scallions/green onions might also work.
Parsley Basel rosemary strawberrys
They would make a great herb garden!
I would do an herb garden
Lettuce greens would work well in those planters, as they have shallow roots. Radishes, spinach too
Herbs would be great in those!
of course not all but herbs , tomatoes , strawberries , cucumber, scallions for sure will grow there
