With any water collection system, it is important to keep it bug free. Also to keep water flowing as much as possible. Water that just sits there, and is warm or hot will grow bacteria. Most rain barrels have a filter screen at the top and a spigot at the bottom so there isn't necessarily a need for a pump. You might check with your utility company for a free barrel. We got ours for installing a smart meter.
